What is GNU General Public License (GPL)?
GNU General Public License (GPL) is a widely used free software license that grants users the freedom to run, study, share, and modify software. It’s a “copyleft” license, meaning that any derivative works must also be licensed under the GPL, ensuring continued freedom for users. The GPL was created by Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation to protect the rights of users and prevent software from becoming proprietary.
How do get a GPL license?
You don’t “get” it. You write inside your software (inside every file at the top, inside the readme, maybe also have a license.txt file). And you just give the name of the GPL license you want to use. There are several version (GPLv2, GPLv3…).
- You can list their full names e.g. GNU General Public License v3.0
- Or the shortened SPDX format name: GPL-3.0-only
You can include the text of the license (but it’s not mandatory) in a file. You can use the one from SPDX.org: Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX) or from any other reference source (FSF’s site, Open Source Initiative site).
